In each case, drop the connecting word and you have your two independent clauses (complete sentences). If it's easier, find the verb first and then ask who or what did the action was whatever. In your example, the first verb is "are." Who or what are? "Streets" are. Same for the second one. If you are better finding nouns or pronouns, find the first in each sentence and ask what it did or is. I hope that helps.
